INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY 2012

INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY

DATE: 5th December 2012

As famously coined by the Greek fabulist Aesop, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”.

Whether it is called “Minga” in Latin America “Harambee” in East Africa or “mikprites” in Albanian, volunteerism is an expression of a core principle of most cultures, as well as a fundamental source of community strength, resilience, solidarity and social cohesion.

Purposeful volunteerism strengthens trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens. When everyone contributes their skills and knowledge through volunteer action, this combined effort can be significant towards achieving human peace and capital development. With a large influx of individuals engaged in development initiatives through volunteer actions worldwide, it is these same efforts that come in handy to improve their lives as well as the lives of others.

In recognition of the importance of volunteers, Aktivis Galau joins the world to celebrate all its volunteers on the International Volunteer’s Day. Volunteers should be acknowledged for the important contribution they make to the community. Many not-for-profit organizations would find it impossible to carry out their work without volunteers. Their recognition lets them know that others appreciate what they do. It gives them a feeling of accomplishment and motivates them to continue giving selflessly to the society for sustainment of development.

By enhancing the capacity of youth to exercise the choices they set, participate and contribute to development planning at all levels in society; it is our hope that this empowers them and gives them a stake in the futures of the communities they live in. The enormous potential of volunteerism for development that lies within youth inspires us as an organization and it is our mission to deliver on that potential.

Happy volunteer’s day
Xoxo, admin AG.

G(irls) 20 Summit 2013

Deadline: December, 30th 2012

The G(irls)20 Summit brings together one girl, aged 18-20, from each G20 country, two weeks before the G20 leaders meeting to look at their agenda thru the lens of the economic empowerment of girls and women and the importance of inclusion.
The delegates participate in panel discussions, attend workshops and caucus to discuss and promote tangible, scalable solutions toward financial prosperity & the economic and political empowerment of girls and women, culminating in a delegate led press conference and communiqué that provides a blueprint on how the G20 leaders can utilize and engage one of the best resources in the world – girls and women.

The empowerment of girls and women is one of the most effective tools for economic, political and social development. With 3.5 billion girls and women in the world, it is imperative to the economic growth and political stability of countries that they are included in the decision making process. As we look for innovative, sustainable and socially responsible solutions to global economic and social challenges, the involvement of half the world’s population can make a significant difference.

To highlight the prowess of girls and women and their role in development and innovation, prior to the G20 leaders meeting in Russia, twenty-one girls, one from each G20 country plus representatives from the European and African Unions, will come together for the third G(irls)20 Summit that will be held June 13th to 21st 2013. The G(irls)20 Summit themes will parallel the themes of the G20 leaders meeting.

Delegates will participate in panel discussions, attend workshops on subjects such as media relations, social media and business planning, and caucus to discuss and promote tangible, scalable solutions toward economic prosperity. The Summit culminates in a delegate-led press conference and communiqué that provides a blueprint to G20 leaders on how to utilize and engage one of the best resources in the world – girls and women.

If you are a passionate, forward thinking, solution oriented young woman from a G20 country or can represent the European or African Union and will be 18-20 years of age at the time of the Summit (June 13th to 21st), you are invited to apply.

With the support of a number of partners, we are committed to ensuring that the experience is accessible to all, and will be assisting with the costs of the Summit for delegates selected to attend, including flights and accommodations.

Global Power Shift (International Climate Change Gathering) by 350.org

Deadline: December, 16th 2012

I would like to inform you (for those you are not yet informed) about the Global Power Shift (International Climate Change Gathering) that 350.org is organizing in Istanbul from 10th to 17th June 2013. Please apply by the 16th December if you are interested about attending. Good luck
Hello,
I’m writing to let you know about Global PowerShift, an international gathering that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey from June 10-17, 2013. This gathering will bring together 600 young organizers from around the world to skillshare, trade tactics and connect on how we will be the generation that turns the tide on the climate crisis. Organizers who attend Global PowerShift will then return to their own countries and help to organize a regional gathering, developing regional campaigns, goals, actions and networks. As co2 levels and sea levels rise exponentially - so must our movement.
We know that the ecological crisis is merely a symptom of an unjust system and unsustainable culture. To accomplish the deep systemic change needed to avert complete catastrophe we will need to bring together a wide diversity of movements and thus we strongly encourage young organizers from a diverse backgrounds and struggles to apply. You can apply here, and please share this email with anyone you think might bring unique skills to this historic gathering. Application deadline is December 16th, and all expenses will be covered for participants.

WORLD AIDS DAY "GETTING TO ZERO"

WORLD AIDS DAY "GETTING TO ZERO"

DATE: 1ST DECEMBER 2012

Amidst the marginalization, social exclusion and drug abuse, just to mention
but a few, the world today is still witnessing the disastrous AIDS pandemic.
Besides sapping vital forces along, reducing production capacities,
enlarging the enormous gap between the rich and the poor and striking down
populations, this epidemic is synonymous with socio-economic regression.

An epidemic of the magnitude, complexity and urgency of HIV/AIDS is not
confined to national borders, divisions within society or sectorial
responsibilities, it demands response that is both collaborative and
complementary from all sections of society be it governments, NGO's, media
or private sector.

Halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS is a key Millennium Development
Goal and a challenge which the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) has given top
priority in all its development undertakings. Adopting a multi-sectorial
approach that solicits committed participation of all stake holders in the
fight against HIV /AIDS has been and remains a high priority for action
throughout all our work from headquarters to the field.

In view of the disastrous effect of HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS adopted a strategy
"Getting to Zero 2011-2015", which aims to advance global progress in
achieving country set targets for universal access to HIV prevention,
treatment, care and support.

The records of the past decades should confront all stakeholders with new
challenges for the coming few years. Strengthening commitment to prevention,
allied with innovative financing strategies, alleviating the negative
impacts of HIV/AIDS on individuals, families as well as communities, early
delivery of new and additional policies, should create an environment
required to achieve this target.

On this day every year, the world gets a chance to come together to not only
commemorate the lives of people who have unfortunately fallen victim to the
disease but also come up with strategies that are concrete and practical
towards achieving the theme for this year.

It is the time to take leadership and build defenses to save our future
generations and to protect the people infected and affected from the
epidemic. We, at WAY, acknowledge this challenge and commit to respond with
renewable responsibility, sensitivity and vigor.

On this day, let us speak up and make a difference towards an AIDS free
world!
