I would like to inform you (for those you are not yet informed) about the Global Power Shift (International Climate Change Gathering) that 350.org is organizing in Istanbul from 10th to 17th June 2013. Please apply by the 16th December if you are interested about attending. Good luck
Hello,
I’m writing to let you know about Global PowerShift, an international gathering that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey from June 10-17, 2013. This gathering will bring together 600 young organizers from around the world to skillshare, trade tactics and connect on how we will be the generation that turns the tide on the climate crisis. Organizers who attend Global PowerShift will then return to their own countries and help to organize a regional gathering, developing regional campaigns, goals, actions and networks. As co2 levels and sea levels rise exponentially - so must our movement.
We know that the ecological crisis is merely a symptom of an unjust system and unsustainable culture. To accomplish the deep systemic change needed to avert complete catastrophe we will need to bring together a wide diversity of movements and thus we strongly encourage young organizers from a diverse backgrounds and struggles to apply. You can apply here, and please share this email with anyone you think might bring unique skills to this historic gathering. 1. NWP Water workshop: 18-20 July 2012, Mexico
The UNFCCC secretariat is convening this workshop in accordance with the decisions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) at its seventeenth session, under the guidance of the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

The objective of the Nairobi work programme is to assist all Parties, in particular developing countries, including the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS), to improve their understanding and assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, and to make informed decisions on practical adaptation actions and measures to respond to climate change on a sound scientific, technical and socio-economic basis, taking into account current and future climate change and variability.

As part of the activities under the Nairobi work programme, the COP requested the secretariat to organize a technical workshop on water, climate change impacts and adaptation strategies, in collaboration with Nairobi work programme partner organizations and other relevant organizations.  The workshop will be informed by the information contained in Annex I to the report of the SBSTA on its thirty-fourth session and subsequent views of Parties, and will include indigenous and traditional knowledge and practices for adaptation and gender-sensitive tools and approaches as cross-cutting issues.

It is particularly desirable that nominated participants have good technical knowledge of and/or practical experience in areas related to water resources, for example knowledge sharing and management; governance and institutional capacity building; enhancing resilience; and cross-sectoral approaches.

2. Loss and Damage workshop: 23-25 July 2012, Mexico
Recognizing the need to strengthen international cooperation and expertise in order to understand and reduce loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, the COP established, under the Cancun Adaptation Framework, a work programme in order to consider approaches to address loss and damage associated with climate change impacts in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change (hereinafter referred to as the work programme).

As part of the activities under the work programme, the SBI requested the secretariat to organize an expert meeting with experts nominated by Parties, relevant organizations and other stakeholders in order to address issues related to the thematic area on a range of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, taking into consideration experience at all levels.

In accordance with the mandate, discussion at the meeting will take into account the following questions:

·         What is the full range of approaches and tools that can be used to address the risk of loss and damage, at all levels and for a broad range of sectors and ecosystems, considering both extreme weather events and slow onset events?  Such approaches and tools include, inter alia, conventional, non-conventional and innovative instruments to address specific types of loss and damage in the context of this thematic area, especially those driven by the multiplying, magnifying and intensifying effects of climate change at the national, subnational and local levels.  What is known about the relative cost-effectiveness of these tools?

·         What are the foundational resource requirements (e.g. budget, infrastructure, and technical capacity for implementation) in order for different strategies and tools to be effectively applied?

·         What are the lessons learned from existing efforts within both the public and private sectors, considering elements of design, limitations, challenges and best practices?

·         What are the links and synergies between risk reduction and other instruments such as risk transfer? How can comprehensive risk management portfolios or toolkits be designed?

To achieve the objectives of the meeting, it is particularly desirable that nominated participants have good technical knowledge of and/or practical experiences in the issues referred to in the above mentioned questions.
