IYCC 2012

Background

“Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only in respect of economic

growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral

and spiritual life.”– UNESCO

Unity has always been the underlying objective and issue addressed in the
youth programmes/events convened locally and internationally.  In recent
years, focus has narrowed on topics like interculture, cultural tolerance and
cultural gaps in addressing the issue of unity.  International organisations
like UNESCO and ASEAN have been organising youth related events
revolving around these topics and focus areas.
Why the YOUTH?
Youth population currently comprises approximately 18% of the world
population, which gives us about 1 billion plus youth living in the world.
Based on the United Nations’ definition, youth are individuals who are
between 15-24 years old.  However, these age groups for youth differ
from one country to another to suit the local context.
With rapid globalisation happening in the world today, youth are directly
and indirectly influenced by many other modern cultures through access
to the mass media and information available on the web.  This nevertheless
affects and shapes their personal values and perspectives.
Youth & Culture
Cultural understanding and acceptance is regarded as one of the pillars to
build a strong foundation for a thriving society.  It must be nurtured and
practiced in order for it to take root.  Sarawak is fortunate as it
enjoys intercultural bonding and racial harmony among its different ethnic
groups due to the early efforts of our forefathers.  In an effort to continue
this legacy for Sarawak, Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) with
Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) aim to engage the youth in
appreciating their local cultures and getting to know other cultures as well
through an international cultural conference.
The International Youth Cultural Conference aims to bring youth from
different states of Malaysia, and international youth organisations around
the region and abroad to share and discuss on their culture as well as their
efforts in promoting culture as a unifying force in their countries.

Virtual iEARN Conference and Youth Summit 2012

November 12 – 16, 2012

Historic Live Online Educational Event in Partnership with Third Annual Global Education Conference

The annual iEARN International Conference and Youth Summit will be held Monday, November 12 through Friday, November 16, 2012.  It will be held in conjunction with the third annual Global Education Conference, creating an historic free week-long online event bringing together educators and innovators from around the world.  The entire conference, which may include upwards of 10,000+ participants, will be held online using the Blackboard Collaborate platform (formerly known as Elluminate/Wimba).

The collaboration between the iEARN conference and the Global Education Conference will provide a collaborative, inclusive, world-wide community initiative involving students, educators, and organizations at all levels. It is designed to significantly increase opportunities for building education-related connections around the globe while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity.

The conference seeks to present ideas, examples, and collaborative projects related to connecting educators and classrooms with a strong emphasis on promoting global awareness, fostering global competency, and inspiring action towards solving real–world problems. Through this event, attendees will challenge themselves and others to become more active citizens of the world. Participants are encouraged to learn, question, create, and engage in meaningful, authentic opportunities within a global context!

Starting in 1994, the annual iEARN Conference has been traditionally a physical event, held in a different country every year. Through this innovative partnership, participation in the combined conference will potentially enable tens of thousands of educators and youth to engage in interaction and sharing on an unprecedented level.

The Call for Proposals for the 2012 Global Education Conference and Virtual iEARN International Conference and Youth Summit is now open. While the final deadline for submissions is October 15, 2012, presenters will be notified of acceptance on a rolling basis starting June 30, 2012.
The 2012 Virtual iEARN International Conference and Youth Summit will be organized by a committee made up of iEARN coordinators from Canada, Kenya, the USA, and members of the global iEARNAssembly's Executive Council.
