1. NWP Water workshop: 18-20 July 2012, Mexico
The UNFCCC secretariat is convening this workshop in accordance with the decisions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) at its seventeenth session, under the guidance of the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

The objective of the Nairobi work programme is to assist all Parties, in particular developing countries, including the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS), to improve their understanding and assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, and to make informed decisions on practical adaptation actions and measures to respond to climate change on a sound scientific, technical and socio-economic basis, taking into account current and future climate change and variability.

As part of the activities under the Nairobi work programme, the COP requested the secretariat to organize a technical workshop on water, climate change impacts and adaptation strategies, in collaboration with Nairobi work programme partner organizations and other relevant organizations.  The workshop will be informed by the information contained in Annex I to the report of the SBSTA on its thirty-fourth session and subsequent views of Parties, and will include indigenous and traditional knowledge and practices for adaptation and gender-sensitive tools and approaches as cross-cutting issues.

It is particularly desirable that nominated participants have good technical knowledge of and/or practical experience in areas related to water resources, for example knowledge sharing and management; governance and institutional capacity building; enhancing resilience; and cross-sectoral approaches.

2. Loss and Damage workshop: 23-25 July 2012, Mexico
Recognizing the need to strengthen international cooperation and expertise in order to understand and reduce loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, the COP established, under the Cancun Adaptation Framework, a work programme in order to consider approaches to address loss and damage associated with climate change impacts in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change (hereinafter referred to as the work programme).

As part of the activities under the work programme, the SBI requested the secretariat to organize an expert meeting with experts nominated by Parties, relevant organizations and other stakeholders in order to address issues related to the thematic area on a range of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, taking into consideration experience at all levels.

In accordance with the mandate, discussion at the meeting will take into account the following questions:

·         What is the full range of approaches and tools that can be used to address the risk of loss and damage, at all levels and for a broad range of sectors and ecosystems, considering both extreme weather events and slow onset events?  Such approaches and tools include, inter alia, conventional, non-conventional and innovative instruments to address specific types of loss and damage in the context of this thematic area, especially those driven by the multiplying, magnifying and intensifying effects of climate change at the national, subnational and local levels.  What is known about the relative cost-effectiveness of these tools?

·         What are the foundational resource requirements (e.g. budget, infrastructure, and technical capacity for implementation) in order for different strategies and tools to be effectively applied?

·         What are the lessons learned from existing efforts within both the public and private sectors, considering elements of design, limitations, challenges and best practices?

·         What are the links and synergies between risk reduction and other instruments such as risk transfer? How can comprehensive risk management portfolios or toolkits be designed?

To achieve the objectives of the meeting, it is particularly desirable that nominated participants have good technical knowledge of and/or practical experiences in the issues referred to in the above mentioned questions.

Global Forum on Migration & Development

Deadline: June 30, 2012

The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) emerged as an outcome of the UN General Assembly’s High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development in 2006. It is a state-led (but not states-only), voluntary process dedicated to informal, non-binding and outcomes-oriented dialogue. Policymakers and stakeholders from many countries all over the world participate in various GFMD meetings, in particular a large annual GFMD convening, to discuss the relation between migration and development, share experiences and forge practical cooperation.

Although state-led, the GFMD directly engages civil society partners, including migrant and diaspora organizations, human rights and development groups, labour unions, and members of the academic community and the private sector. Civil society partners are invited to provide input and make recommendations and concrete proposals. To this end Civil Society Days (CSD) are organized prior to the annual meeting of governments.

Each year the GFMD is organized by a different host government.  For its sixth year in 2012, the Chair is the Republic of Mauritius. In 2013, the Global Forum will not take place; instead the General Assembly of the UN will be hosting the second High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development. In 2014 Sweden will be chairing the GFMD; in 2015, Turkey.

The Civil Society Days of the 2012 Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) will take place on 19 and 20 November in Mauritius. A shared session with government and civil society representatives is scheduled for the morning of the 21st of November.
  • Application to the Civil Society Days 2012 is open to all sectors of civil society, including diaspora and migrant organizations, human rights and development groups, labour unions and representatives from academia and the private sector.
  • In addition, a smaller number of observers, governments and special guests are welcome by invitation only. Invitations will be sent over the summer. Media representatives can apply for accreditation to the Civil Society Days at a later stage.
  • There will be 150 - 200 civil society delegates. As in all prior years, if more people apply, there will be a selection process supervised by the Civil Society Coordinating Office and the International Advisory Committee to ensure inclusive and diverse participation, taking into account sectoral, geographic, and gender diversity, broad constituency and relevant experience and knowledge on migration and development issues.
  • Per organization only one application will be accepted.
