IYCC 2012

Background

“Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only in respect of economic

growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral

and spiritual life.”– UNESCO

Unity has always been the underlying objective and issue addressed in the
youth programmes/events convened locally and internationally.  In recent
years, focus has narrowed on topics like interculture, cultural tolerance and
cultural gaps in addressing the issue of unity.  International organisations
like UNESCO and ASEAN have been organising youth related events
revolving around these topics and focus areas.
Why the YOUTH?
Youth population currently comprises approximately 18% of the world
population, which gives us about 1 billion plus youth living in the world.
Based on the United Nations’ definition, youth are individuals who are
between 15-24 years old.  However, these age groups for youth differ
from one country to another to suit the local context.
With rapid globalisation happening in the world today, youth are directly
and indirectly influenced by many other modern cultures through access
to the mass media and information available on the web.  This nevertheless
affects and shapes their personal values and perspectives.
Youth & Culture
Cultural understanding and acceptance is regarded as one of the pillars to
build a strong foundation for a thriving society.  It must be nurtured and
practiced in order for it to take root.  Sarawak is fortunate as it
enjoys intercultural bonding and racial harmony among its different ethnic
groups due to the early efforts of our forefathers.  In an effort to continue
this legacy for Sarawak, Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) with
Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) aim to engage the youth in
appreciating their local cultures and getting to know other cultures as well
through an international cultural conference.
The International Youth Cultural Conference aims to bring youth from
different states of Malaysia, and international youth organisations around
the region and abroad to share and discuss on their culture as well as their
efforts in promoting culture as a unifying force in their countries.

Asia Europe Meeting 2012

“People’s Solidarity against Poverty and for Sustainable Development: Challenging Unjust and Unequal Development, Building States of Citizens for Citizens”

Vientiane, Laos, 16-19 October, 2012

On 5-6 November, 2012 the 9th Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM9) will take place in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Under the theme ‘Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity’, leaders of 49 member states and governments in Asia and Europe will exchange views, priorities and plans on regional and global issues that are of common interest to both regions at the summit.
Prior to and in conjunction with ASEM9, the Asia-Europe People’s Forum (AEPF9) will hold its 9th biennial People’s Forum on 16-19 October, 2012 under the title ‘People’s Solidarity against Poverty and for Sustainable Development: Challenging Unjust and Unequal Development, Building States of Citizens for Citizens’.
AEPF9 will tackle four major themes or People’s Visions, which represent AEPF hopes for citizens of ASEM member countries and the communities they live in. These are:
• Universal Social Protection and Access to Essential Services;
• Food Sovereignty and Sustainable Land and Natural Resource Management;
• Sustainable Energy Production and Use; and
• Just Work and Sustainable Livelihoods.
Progress towards the realisation of these People’s Visions is at the heart of a way out of the multiple crises confronting people, states and institutions globally. The ecological, debt, financial and food crises, which have been caused and compounded by the policies and practices of many governments in both rich and poor countries and their approaches to regulation of business, have caused increasing social polarization between peoples and states. In Asia, the crises are exacerbating poverty and inequality; already widespread before the present crises. In Europe, the crises are creating indebtedness, joblessness and insecurity. We are increasingly experiencing ‘corporate capture’:
multinational and national corporations structuring and determining our lives and livelihoods. The responses of citizens are often at local and national levels and to complement these, the AEPF is looking to encourage and strengthen cooperation and solidarity of people’s networks regionally, inter-regionally and globally.
There are three stages that will contribute to building and promoting the Asia-Europe People’s Visions:
Preparation: ensuring that people across ASEM countries have the opportunity to debate, discuss and
shape the AEPF9 themes.
The AEPF9 Forum: ensuring that the event is open, dynamic and inclusive and focuses on meaningful
and practical discussion for change.
Beyond AEPF9: ensuring that commitments made during AEPF9 are honoured and that a sound
platform for AEPF10 is laid.
AEPF9 will be an exciting series of interlinked dialogues, workshops, actions, policy debates and open spaces. You can be part of this event by actively participating in discussions to build the People’s Visions, which will be the basis of declarations from the Forum or by co-organising an event and/or contributing human and financial resources. There will be a call for expressions of interest to organise workshops and events soon.

Interested in joining us? Contribute your knowledge, resources or time to enable AEPF9 to be a success. This is YOUR forum.

Please watch out for announcements on AEPF9 activities and on how to register as a participant or coorganiser

The capital of the Philippines is in Metro Manila, located in the middle of Luzon. More than a hundred ethnic groups exist, and their culture is interspersed with Chinese, Spanish and American heritage to create a culture that is distinctly Filipino. The two official languages are English and Filipino, the latter of which is based on the Tagalog dialect.  The Philippines is a founding and active member of the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Theme
The 1st WYAAP Emerging Leaders Conference will focus on the theme: Sustainable Development: Investing for Future Generations. Sustainable development, which includes three interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars - social, economic and environmental areas, is the United Nations' overarching concept for development and human rights. For World Youth Alliance, sustainable development can be achieved only through a person-centered approach to each of these three pillars.

The GoalAs stated in WYA’s Declaration on Sustainable Development, upholding the dignity of the person must be the primary goal of sustainable development and the means by which we create a sustainable world. This conference aims to create a deeper understanding of issues on sustainable development. It also serves as venue for the Asia Pacific youth to engage in significant discussions and cultural exchanges. This will strengthen a region-wide cooperation among youth to implement projects among participating individuals and organizations and explore possibilities for project collaboration, laying the groundwork for long-term partnerships.
