the UN-REDD Programme Photo Contest organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Deadline: April 25th, 2013

THE CONTEST

The objective of this photo contest is to create awareness worldwide of the meaning behind Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) and its linkages to food security. The contest will harness photo talent from around the world in order to illustrate and convey the many linkages between REDD+ and Food. Photographers can submit individual photos inspired by the theme:Nurture forests for the future -Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) for Food Security.
Read the terms and conditions of the photo contest here.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) within the UN-REDD Programmebelieves that REDD+ can also ensure food security through good agriculture practices, biodiversity conservation, livelihoods diversification, good governance and better land management. That is exactly what we would like you to capture through your lenses!
The UN-REDD Programme, a collaborative initiative between FAO the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this year is celebrating its 5th anniversary supporting countries in implementing REDD+  as a way to create an incentive for developing countries to protect, better manage and wisely use their forest resources, contributing to the global fight against climate change.
This can become a powerful and stunning image!
The image should depict one or more of the following activities:
  • Farmers producing more on less land using agro-ecosystems and thus avoiding clearance of new forest
  • Good agricultural practices: such as agroforestry, alley cropping, agrosilvipastoral, inter cropping of trees and crops, trees produced on farms, tree apiculture, trees on pasture, etc
  • Protected areas, forest reserves, conservation
  • Forest dependant people in forest ecosystems, especially women and indigenous peoples
  • Trees as suppliers of fruits, edible leaves, nuts, medicine, etc
  • Livelihoods diversification and good land management.
How do trees connect to food security?
Forests and trees are sources of food for millions of the world’s poorest people.
What does REDD+ look like?
REDD+ is about keeping trees standing and managing our forests in a sustainable way.

JUDGING

A shortlist of the best 25 photos submitted to the contest will be selected to be presented during an exhibit at the International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition 13-15 May 2013 to be held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Forty-three percent of the world’s population is currently under 25 - and the number of young people is rising fastest in those parts of the world with the lowest economic growth.  The ICPD Programme of Action made the needs of youth a priority and yet in all countries of the world, progress on youth issues is lagging.Today’s youth are more connected and tuned in to the world than any generation before. They are growing up fast, in a world that is changing even faster. Fortunately for all of us, young people see the challenges before them in fresh ways and are responding with enthusiasm and imagination. Young people have the potential to transform the social and economic fortunes of their communities, particularly in least developed countries. With the right investments, today’s young people can reach their full potential as individuals, leaders and agents of progress.  And the world clearly needs their energy, their participation and their skills. But delivering that transformation takes partnership action on health, education, employment, sexual and reproductive health and a commitment to real civic engagement.Depsite their enormous stake in the future, youth voices have not been part of the mainstrean development debate. The ICPD Beyond 2014 Global Youth Forum, in Bali from Dec 4-6 2012 aims to address this. Through a partnership of UN agencies, young people, civil society and the private sector the Forum aims to translate the participatory goals of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development into a sustainable youth advocacy movement.Led by young people for young people and contributing directly to the process of defining future development goals, the Global Youth Forum will give young people a stronger voice.  Over 900 delegates will agree on global recommendations for action on five crucial issues:

1. NWP Water workshop: 18-20 July 2012, Mexico
The UNFCCC secretariat is convening this workshop in accordance with the decisions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) at its seventeenth session, under the guidance of the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

The objective of the Nairobi work programme is to assist all Parties, in particular developing countries, including the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS), to improve their understanding and assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, and to make informed decisions on practical adaptation actions and measures to respond to climate change on a sound scientific, technical and socio-economic basis, taking into account current and future climate change and variability.

As part of the activities under the Nairobi work programme, the COP requested the secretariat to organize a technical workshop on water, climate change impacts and adaptation strategies, in collaboration with Nairobi work programme partner organizations and other relevant organizations.  The workshop will be informed by the information contained in Annex I to the report of the SBSTA on its thirty-fourth session and subsequent views of Parties, and will include indigenous and traditional knowledge and practices for adaptation and gender-sensitive tools and approaches as cross-cutting issues.

It is particularly desirable that nominated participants have good technical knowledge of and/or practical experience in areas related to water resources, for example knowledge sharing and management; governance and institutional capacity building; enhancing resilience; and cross-sectoral approaches.

2. Loss and Damage workshop: 23-25 July 2012, Mexico
Recognizing the need to strengthen international cooperation and expertise in order to understand and reduce loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, the COP established, under the Cancun Adaptation Framework, a work programme in order to consider approaches to address loss and damage associated with climate change impacts in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change (hereinafter referred to as the work programme).

As part of the activities under the work programme, the SBI requested the secretariat to organize an expert meeting with experts nominated by Parties, relevant organizations and other stakeholders in order to address issues related to the thematic area on a range of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, taking into consideration experience at all levels.

In accordance with the mandate, discussion at the meeting will take into account the following questions:

·         What is the full range of approaches and tools that can be used to address the risk of loss and damage, at all levels and for a broad range of sectors and ecosystems, considering both extreme weather events and slow onset events?  Such approaches and tools include, inter alia, conventional, non-conventional and innovative instruments to address specific types of loss and damage in the context of this thematic area, especially those driven by the multiplying, magnifying and intensifying effects of climate change at the national, subnational and local levels.  What is known about the relative cost-effectiveness of these tools?

·         What are the foundational resource requirements (e.g. budget, infrastructure, and technical capacity for implementation) in order for different strategies and tools to be effectively applied?

·         What are the lessons learned from existing efforts within both the public and private sectors, considering elements of design, limitations, challenges and best practices?

·         What are the links and synergies between risk reduction and other instruments such as risk transfer? How can comprehensive risk management portfolios or toolkits be designed?

To achieve the objectives of the meeting, it is particularly desirable that nominated participants have good technical knowledge of and/or practical experiences in the issues referred to in the above mentioned questions.
