Bayer Fellowship Program Promoting outstanding talent 2012

For an inventor company like Bayer, young up-and-coming talent is fundamental to long-term success. The Bayer Science & Education Foundation therefore attaches great importance to promoting young talent in Germany and abroad and helping them get their careers off to a good start.

The foundation’s scholarship programs have two main areas of focus – the regular Bayer Fellowship Program for scholarship projects and placements abroad, and additional offerings aimed at specific target groups.

The regular Bayer Fellowship Program is geared to students and trainees in scientific, technical and medical disciplines. Internationalism is a central aspect of this program, and therefore the foundation grants scholarships exclusively to applicants from German-speaking countries wishing to go abroad and foreign applicants who want to come to Germany.

The program comprises the following scholarships:

• Otto Bayer Scholarships for students studying selected natural science and engineering disciplines
• Carl Duisberg Scholarships for students of human and veterinary medicine 
• Kurt Hansen Scholarships for students training to become science teachers
• Hermann Strenger Scholarships for trainees and young professionals with a non-academic background working in the areas of technology, natural sciences, health care and business

The current call for applications for the Otto Bayer, Carl Duisberg, Kurt Hansen and Hermann Strenger Scholarships is taking place during the period from June 1 to July 15, 2012. The independent Foundation Board will hold its next selection meeting on September 7, 2012.

The regular Bayer Fellowship Program is complemented by special additional offerings, which currently comprise:

• The Bayer Deutschlandstipendien – as part of the German government’s national Scholarship Program Act, the foundation sponsors 100 talented students of natural sciences or engineering at 23 German universities 
• The Bayer Lindau Fellowships – the foundation enables selected young scientists from around the world to take part in the Nobel Laureate Meetings in Lindau 
• The Bayer Climate Fellowships – the foundation enables schoolchildren to take part in an international science camp on environmental protection and sustainability

WISE Learners’ Voice 2012

Forty-nine WISE Learners from 31 countries participated in the 2010 and 2011 Summits as full delegates. WISE Learners come from diverse backgrounds – studying disciplines such as Sociology, Environmental Education, Fashion/Interior Design, Computer Systems, Accounting, or Agro-Economics  – and provide unique insights into education and the learning experience.The students selected in 2011 have had opportunities to take part in a year-round advocacy process, working in a multinational team on the theme Increasing Access to Education through Innovation. In order to deepen their understanding of the issue, some of them have been attending major international conferences such as:

Recruiting the 2012 LearnersFollowing the success of the Learners’ Voice Program, WISE is now inviting a further 30 outstanding young learners to join this growing global community. They will be invited to attend this year’s Summit in Doha from November 13 to 15, and may be involved in activities during 2013.

Webinar Description:

Peter Brown will present and discuss his findings from his research which uses the Earth Charter as a framework for rethinking economics, finance, governance, law, and ethics. It argues that all five Western versions of these frameworks rest on assumptions that came to the forefront during the Enlightenment period; and that these assumptions have been undercut by scientific discoveries in the last two centuries, especially in the second half of the 20th century. As a result, they can be regarded as scientific and metaphysical orphans—for their parents have died but they have not. Attempts to formulate a “green economy” and related ideas that are neither deep nor wide enough to fashion an exit from the current steep decline in life’s prospects, since they neither question nor provide alternative assumptions.


Peter Brown is a Professor at the Department of Geography at McGill University in Canada. He is carrying out his research with the Capital Institute.
